Wednesday April 25, 2012 | North Adams Transcript

WILLIAMSTOWN — Hank Barrett scored with 12 seconds left in the first quarter to give the Mount Greylock boys’ lacrosse team a lead that it would never relinquish on its way to a 17-7 victory over Pittsfield, on Tuesday.

“We had kind of a poor first quarter. We weren’t catching or throwing, we were dropping the ball, we weren’t getting to ground balls, and we were tied,” Barrett said. “I heard the countdown and knew that we didn’t want it to end tied and I wanted to give us a little momentum to carry into the second quarter.”

Mount Greylock would indeed carry that momentum into the second quarter as it struck for five goals in the first four minutes of the quarter. In that span, Kent Hanson snapped home two of his three goals, and Ethan Ryan recorded two of his game-high four goals. Noah Kelley had the fifth goal.

By Christopher James, Berkshire Eagle Staff

Sunday April 22, 2012

EAST LONGMEADOW — Jeff Stripp brought his Mount Greylock boys lacrosse team here Saturday morning to face what he called a “really good” East Longmeadow squad.

It turns out the Mounties were even better.

“We knew it was going to be a challenge for us,” said Greylock senior Kent Hanson. “But I don’t think most of the guys thought we’d actually win it. I knew we’d give them a good fight.”

Hanson and his teammate did win it, though, stunning the Spartans 9-5 on their home field. Hanson had a goal, two assists and countless interceptions that kept the ball in a Mountie stick and the pressure on East Longmeadow (6-3). Noah Kelley added three goals while Ethan Ryan had two. Michael McCormack added two goals and an assist.

It was a milestone victory for a Mountie program in its first year at the varsity level against a team that had made the Western Massachusetts tournament three of the last four years. Spartans coach Dan Blinn said he remembers helping Greylock learn the sport when the school had just a club program.

“I’m very impressed with what their coaching staff has done,” Blinn said. “Compared to what they were a couple years ago when we were helping them out to where they are now, the coaches have done a great job with them. … They came out today ready to play. They beat us up and down the field. They deserved that win.”

The Mounties (4-1) kept the game scoreless for more than eight minutes but the Spartans scored two goals in a 16-second span late in the first quarter. Greylock had an early goal called back for a crease violation and its offense was trying to force the ball in front of the cage. Stripp quickly called a timeout and the Mounties would reel off five straight goals to end the half.

“I think we just settled down and recognized what kind of defense they were playing, what kind of offense they were trying to run,” Stripp said. “I think the boys settled in nicely, really in the second quarter. It took us about a quarter to get off the bus.”

From that point on, Greylock dominated possession. The Mounties strung together two goals in 11 seconds midway through the second thanks to strong faceoff play. They did it again, scoring 15 seconds apart in the third after East Longmeadow had cut the lead to two goals early in the period. With Greylock holding the ball, the Spartans couldn’t do much.

“[We have] great coaching, great stick handling,” Hanson said. “Our team, when they get pressured they still hold on to it. We don’t freak out and throw it across the field and stuff.”

Pat Malloy was strong in goal at the other end, making 12 saves and keeping East Longmeadow off the board for more than 17 minutes in the middle of the game. The Spartans had trouble getting to Malloy for most of the day. Greylock got after ground balls and Hanson made like a defensive back in football, scooping several passes out of mid-air. He had a East Longmeadow pass land right in the pocket of his stick in the second quarter. He promptly fired a pass to Kelley who scored the go-ahead goal. The Mounties never trailed again.

“A lot of Western Mass. teams are going to give us a lot more respect now that we’re a varsity sport,” Malloy said.

Greylock now returns to Williamstown to face Pittsfield, likely its strongest challenger in the Berkshire County league, on Tuesday. Both teams are unbeaten in league play.

Friday March 30, 2012 | WILLIAMSTOWN — The first day of varsity girls lacrosse in Berkshire County was all about teaching.

As reported by Christopher James, from The Berkshire Eagle
Read the full article here: Girls lacrosse arrives: Teaching is priority for new varsity sport

Moments before visiting Belchertown and Mount Greylock took to the field at the Williamstown school, Mounties coach Lindsey von Holtz was explaining the rules to her timekeeper. When the game got underway, the two referees spent plenty of time telling players where to go on restarts. Parent and youth coach Jeff Albert spent plenty of time on the sideline, fielding questions from fellow parents about what was happening in front of them.

“There’s a lot of rules to learn as far as a parent sitting on the sideline,” Albert said. “You’ll ask questions, but by the end of the season, you’ll be telling the people the answers. It’s not too difficult.”

After years of hoping and months of anticipation, lacrosse’s advocates were happy to play teacher during Greylock’s 16-7 loss. Mounties boys coach Jeff Stripp proudly watched his daughter’s varsity debut just as he wrapped up the boys practice on an adjacent field.

“This season, it’s really only hit me today,” Stripp said. “My daughter’s playing here and my son’s over here. It’s amazing. I kind of pinch myself when I go home. I feel very fortunate that that’s the case. I’m excited.”

Stripp, through the Berkshire County Lacrosse Association, has helped lead the fight to bring lacrosse from a club sport to the varsity level in the county. While St. Joseph’s has long had a boys team, Thursday was the first time a varsity girls game had been contested in recent memory, and this spring will see the debut of high school leagues for both genders.

The varsity label means there are lots of newcomers to the sport. Von Holtz, who is also Greylock’s athletic director, tried to run through the timing rules before the game after her timekeeper had also been quizzed by the pair of game officials. She paused for a moment when the discussion got to red cards, which lead to an ejection like in soccer.

“If we get to the red point in the first game,” von Holtz said, “we’re done.”

While there were no fouls so flagrant to merit a card, there were plenty of lessons on the field. Belchertown coach Ashley Ziemba said she was impressed with Greylock on the first day out. The game was far from a blowout, with the Orioles leading by just three at halftime.

“I thought it was a good game,” Ziemba said. “I got scared for a little while.”

Von Holtz said it was nice to get a feel for what her team needs to work on. Greylock had just had its first real scrimmage on Wednesday.

“I saw some great things,” von Holtz said. “The girls, I think, started to calm down after a while and start to play and start to see the stuff that we were practicing. I had fun. It’s a little cold, but I had fun.”

Temperatures did dip into the 30s during the game but that didn’t stop a small crowd, including Albert and Stripp, from enjoying the game. Youth players ran through drills on the nearby field that had hosted the Mountie boys earlier in the afternoon. The school seemed more like the center of the lacrosse universe.

“I’m excited that there’s an opportunity for kids at Greylock and other schools in the county to play,” Stripp said. “I love the sport. I’m really passionate about it. I think sharing that love is really part of the philosophy.”

Former Greylock standout lacrosse player, Andy Budz nets 2 goals in contest against Molloy College.

February 25, 2012 – ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Despite two goals each from Andrew Messner (Wakefield, R.I.) and freshman James Peters (Medway, Mass.), the Saint Anselm College men’s lacrosse team fell by a 7-6 margin to the Lions of Molloy College Saturday afternoon. With the non-conference victory for Molloy, the Lions improve to 1-0 on the season while the Hawks fall to 0-1 in their season-opener.

For Molloy, Anthony Marino capped off a hat trick with his game-winning man-up goal with only two minutes remaining in the contest, breaking the 6-6 deadlock with his third goal of the season. Within the second half of the contest, the Hawks were outscored by a 4-to-1 margin as Saint Anselm carried a 5-3 lead into the half.

Peters scored his first collegiate goal to open the scoring for Saint Anselm with 10:42 remaining in the first half, knotting the score at one apiece. Senior midfielder Tyler Steinetz (Sparta, N.J.) and Messner added the next two goals of the game to lift Saint Anselm to a 3-1 lead. Two quick Molloy strikes were countered by goals from freshman Andy Budz (Williamstown, Mass.) and Messner to enter the half.

Hawks goaltender Jonathon O’Reilly (Plano, Texas) drew the loss, his first of the season, by allowing seven goals on 17 shots on net. For Molloy, netminder Tommy Bruno collected his first victory of the season by halting three shots on net and allowing five goals.

Greylock Lacrosse Team Store is Now Open!

~ For a Limited Time ~

Please read the ground rules for the team store carefully…

The team store was created to put a system in place that allowed us to handle our annual gear ordering easier and more efficient for all. The store has been design for both the boys and girls teams at Mt. Greylock and to order jackets for the youth program. The store will only be open until January 23rd (after that date, you will no longer be able to order the items from the store).

Here are the breakdown of the items in the store:

- Team Jackets (Facet Pro Tech – Boy’s is Black / Girl’s is Red)

- Team Practice Gear Bundle (Shorts, Pinnie, Shooting Shirt – Men’s and Women’s)

- Sweatshirt and Sweat Pant (Black Only)

- WLAX Victory Jacket
